Sunflower Oil in India

Sunflower oil, pressed from the seeds of the sunflower is one of the most commonly produced oils in the world. Despite the global production of sunflower oil being approximately 21.2 million metric tons for the past financial year, researchers are still trying to develop a hybrid variety of the flower to increase the oil production in order to keep up with the ever-increasing global demand for sunflower oil.

As of the 2019/2020 crop year, Ukraine is the highest producer of sunflower oil, followed by Russia and Argentina. Ukraine is also the country that exports the most sunflower oil in the world.

Sunflower oil in India Unlike soybean oil, most of the sunflower oil in India is imported, usually from Russia. Compared to 2018, the Indian market saw more than a 20% increase in the amount of sunflower oil imported by India in 2019. This indicates that sunflower oil, an already established market in India, is nowhere close to stagnant.

Like most types of oil in India, there are several brands selling sunflower oil in the Indian market. Most brands have similar pricing and quality, making it impossible to declare any one brand as having the best sunflower oil in India.

Uses and Benefits of sunflower oil

Sunflower oil is rare due to the fact that despite being a popular cooking oil, that is not all it is famous for. Sunflower oil is also a well-known component in cosmetic products, as well as being a skincare product in its own right.

There are two main types of sunflower oil:

Refined oil:

Cold-pressed, unrefined oil Cold-pressed sunflower oil is also available in its organic version, with no GMOs to affect the purity of the seed.

Uses and Benefits:

Cooking oil Sunflower oil is an excellent oil for recipes that require frying. As the refined type of oil has no discernible taste or smell, it is a good neutral base for most dishes. The other type, i.e. cold-pressed, can taste buttery. It is used for a lesser number of dishes and is much harder to find. In most cases, the oil that is used for daily cooking purposes is refined sunflower oil.

Refined sunflower oil has an extremely high smoke point of approximately 232°C, making it a good choice for high heat cooking like frying or searing.

Unrefined oil can also be used as a salad dressing, with the natural flavor giving it a memorable taste. ·

Cosmetic:

The best sunflower oil to use for cosmetic purposes is of the cold-pressed variety. It would be preferable for the oil to be organic as well, but it is not required. Avoid using refined oil on your skin, as the properties of the refined oil may be different, and may cause skin reactions.

Used in small doses, sunflower oil can be used as a moisturizer to reduce bacteria and treat dry skin. Sunflower oil is non-comedogenic, and therefore it will be absorbed in the skin without clogging the pores. It is also anti-inflammatory and acts as a barrier to protect the skin from harmful rays. Sunflower oil is also used as a hair massage oil.

Due to its light texture, the oil, when used in small quantities on the roots of the hair, is not noticeable and gives the hair a natural shine. The oil can be used in lieu of a stay-in conditioner. As a component in cosmetic products, sunflower oil is generally known for its anti-oxidant properties, especially the benefits of Vitamin E, which is known to improve skin and hair health.

Sunflower oil has also been found to accelerate wound healing among animals, though such results have not been replicated among human beings.
